Collected hawthorn
Hi,
Having seen Tony's hawthorns I finally made a postive move.....
At the end of 2009 I bit the bullet and cut my hawthorn back hard to grow a more compact tree. I acceppt the pot is on the small side, but the tree has been in it for 2 yrs and is very vigirous. I do see the finished tree rotated a little to the left.
See Tony, you do have an influence. I hope you'll find the time to virtual a possible future for this tree.
If anyone would offer a drawing or a virtual or 3 it would be very much appreciated.

Hi Will,
Yes, I plan to carve the top and make a feature of the deadwood.

Yes, listen to Ed. He knows about styling hawthorns, since he won the last contest by Tony Tickle.

I'll give you a naked one. All goes quiet (hopefully) in the we we hours, so I'll draw it then.

Thank you
Thank you all for your fine work.
Mario,
Thank you again. I feel the crown is a little uniform. To me the interesting thing is the movement, anything that adds to that is a plus.
I feel your virtual is a little on the balanced side of that.
Will,
Removing the large root, your drawing is a good solution, hope the root is kind to me.
Also I like the graceful movement right to left, although the right hand has an interesting kink that cannot be seen in the original picture and would create a large flat area if removed. Which no doubt Will you could make interesting. I would be concerned I couldn't matched the natrual deadwood already there.
Perhaps I needed to post the other side as well.
A picture from a few years ago That might show the movement at the end of the trunk/branch.
Ed, I feel has created a good summer image scale wise, but Will, your winter image is very refined and appealing to me. Not sure how it would look in full leaf, perhaps a little heavy?
Will I say this as a bonsai buddy, Get some sleep.
Dispite the already fine work, I can take more if anyone is kind enough to offer.

Summer or Winter? Obviously its good for a tree to look great, any time of year. Personally I grow deciduous trees for their Winter image and therefore the Summer image can be a bit heavy and vice versa for the Summer image. As much as I like Ed's virtual, it looks a bit like a Pine to me and the silhouette is too compact. You'll have lots of fun with this one Jerry

Re: Collected hawthorn
Lovely Hawthorn Jerry and I love Will's virtual.
Hawthorn's look great in thier Winter clothes and this would be the focus if this were my tree (yeah right, ain't gunna happen). That said maybe a slightly lighter version might satisfy a great year round image.
Mind you, what do I know????
LP&B,
Simon

Re: Collected hawthorn
Thanks to those who liked my idea. Its good to have as many ideas or options as possible, as our trees are sometimes unpredictable but always ever changing. Jerry has a few ideas to play with at least.
