Defoliating

Has anyone attempted defoliating a Hawthorn completely and what
were your results? I have personally did the odd branch to increase
the foliage mass on well established very healthy trees but never the whole tree.
anyone out there got any views or experience on the subject

Hello Alex. I have defoliated Hawthorn with good results but it has to be done quite early. End of May/ begining of June is the best time and you will be rewarded with lots of finer side branches, as long as you have fed the tree well. I have tried this later in the year and the tree has not come back into leaf.
