Your third photo shows a break in the bark which appears to go into the trunk somewhat. My experience has been that if your have a cleavage in the integrity of the bark, rain and bugs can hurt the project to the point of killing the tree. Make sure that this area of breakage of the bark has a dependent place to drain accumulated rain water, container water, and bug control. The first thing that pops into mind is termites. They'd have a feast. Standing water also kills wood. Thus the need for a dependent drainage pathway to empty the water and keep it from accumulating. Application of cut paste or, possibly, lime sulphur can be a deterrent. Great cascade.
