Happy Holidays to you!  Your plant looks to me to be Polyscias balfouriana, the Shield Aralia.  A common cultivar sold for cultivation is pots is 'Fabien'.

My guess would also be a Polyscias, one of the Aralia.

hey mike !
where ya been ???

you are one of the last guys i would disagree with, but i think the shield (or dinner plate as andre calls it) aralia is the closer guess (Polyscias scutellaria*)... i have one and the leaves and trunk look the same.

*lookit me, slinging proper latin names around as if i didnt just now google it to be sure i was right Embarassed Razz

I was just throwing that out there for fun.
In all seriousness though just like the original poster I have no idea what it is,if it's good for bonsai or just a plant to take a chance on because it was there in hopes that it could be.
I tend to not take those chances. Before buying or digging I make sure the plant is a decent species for bonsai first then consider adding it to my bench. Why waste the time ,effort and money?
I'm around Kevin. Just not much bonsai stuff going on for me right now.

andre shrugged them off as an ugly plant...
mine is just a tiny mame that i really like and have so far been successful at keeping small over the past few years
(found it on the orphan shelf at the nursery for $1)

here was the original thread on mine... it now has elongated enough to put 2 more bends in it and i hope to keep it at that

Kevin,

I believe they can be bonsai. The mother plant for this had an 8 inch trunk.
BUT I think you should look for the thread leaf type.
Here is as far as I got.
