Writing on a Pot

Here is a pot I acquired in a recent gift exchange. I was told it is a good quality Chinese pot. Size is 9 cm, 3 1/2." According to Bill, it says "Mai Ree had a little lamb," but I don't believe it, since China is not known for sheep raising. Anybody know what it says? It looks more like Japanese writing to me, but what do I know? I think there is another line missing. The picture may be a Chinese nobleman, but it's hard to tell.
