large nursery taxus
homedepot end of season clearance. I paid $4 usd for each of these 7ft tall taxus shrubs.!!! I should go back for more!
. they sit burlap wrapped in what appears to be clay in 7 gallon pots. since they were so big I could only fit 4 of them in the back of my vw. I had to cut them pretty hard to make em fit but I wasn't walking away from that price or size the trunks on them are at least 3-4 inches with plenty of lower and inner growth.
now my question is should I keep going now ive got them home and get rid of stuff I know I wont use in the design of the tree, or let them be til spring and chop out the mess and repot at the same time? I know you guys will send me in the right direction

Re: large nursery taxus
I tend to keep new trees for a few months before rushing in to make major changes. And I've also learned the hard way that yews are not bullet proof. My suggestion is don't do anything until the spring then consider repotting into bonsai soil. Take your time.

Great deal with one caveat. If they are the upright growing type, sometimes named 'Hicksii' it's a challenge to wire down the branches for horizontal growth. You'll need to wire and wire and new growth will be upright.
On the plus side you can create a beautiful base and deadwood.

I just broke my neck. Look like your chippin' away at it...I think......
Looks like in good health, that's key. Now let 'em rest. Maybe.

Would you consider a guy wire on the long trunk and bend it way down so that you can work towards something like this:
