OK to bring a J Virginiana into the city?
My sister has a J. Virginiana volunteer at her house in the country I've been eyeing and have permission to dig up. They are not looked upon with favor around here- farmland and apple orchards. Would it be un-neighborly of me to keep one in my backyard, considering their local status? I don't want to cause problems for neighbors' apple trees, or have little JV's popping up all over.

If your sister has them popping up in the country it is quite likely they're popping up around you, too. Apple growers routinely spray for things like that.

that is the most courteous question i have ever heerd !!!
and only in omaha will you find orchards and farms still in the city
all razzing aside, i don't reckon one container growd JV would wreak havoc...
(but of course, thats what they say about many things...)

J. virginiana
Personally, I would not grow it. It is not that great as a bonsai and there is no sense risking more contamination. The plant is a scourge. Dig up something else.

You should only take it into the city if it wants to go. If you take it against its will it may resent it forever.

Okay, picture time! I dug up this tree from my sister's place, left it mostly in the clay it was in, but wedged in some chicken grit, put it in the shade and have done little else.

Very unfortunate choice of background for this pic. This is after a few weeks out of the ground. It is about 3-4 ft tall, and has a 1.25" trunk.

After first seeing that it was healthy, the base of the trunk caught my eye. I'll see what I can do with it!
