Re: The island ...
Would it not be advisable to grow moss on the very flat part of this stone? I ask because that flat part looks a little unnatural, and since Viet Nam is very lush...

Re: The island ...
Oh I can see it as a peaceful sea Hưng - Trần, yes. Placed in a tray of water, I was not able to see it that way but with your suggestion it becomes obvious.

Re: The island ...
As a stuent of suiseki, I appreciate the stone being placed in water as it makes enough subtle suggestion as it being an island. More so then if it were in a dai. yet the dai could have been carved in such a way to express waves. Which we often see in chinese efforts.
Yet David's suggestion to grow moss in an effort to make the stone more believeable in It's country of origin is quite a natural progression. Yet not quite within the ground rules of stone appreciation, japanese style.
Still as different cultures contribute in their own way, and folks like David continue to see things, I think it opens up new roads for the imagination.

Re: The island ...
This was my first collected suiseki. It caught my attention because the mountain rock was dark yet the sides in patches were green, just as if the mountain was covered by forests. That's why I find the thought of growing moss as a natural effort to create this feeling....

Re: The island ...
Instead of a temple I could see here the figure of a lighthouse here where I live, keeping ships away from the shore,
Interesting how light the rock is, and yet how dark and wonderful when wet. Think before a show or judging would need to be sprayed with water pretty heavily.
thanks for your sharing...

Love the hard stonequality, color and patina... dry, or drying up in the suiban...But it does look to me, as if the stone is turning its back at the viewer .

Hi Trantanhung
Now is 2/3 of the stone orientated towards the viewer....a much better front, now you can see the landskape....had the last part also done this, would the stone have been perfect, but it is still a nice stone.
Kind regards Yvonne

Re: The island ...
This stone's bottom seems to have been deliberately cut flat. Is that so?
I know some purists have a problem with that, but it just makes things easier when it comes to making a dai presentation or one in a suiban.
I like the perspective of movement and distance that this stone expresses.
