Ficus salicaria Exposure
I recently ran across an allegation that the willow leaf fig tolerates low light levels in the home. Has anyone tried growing this species on a windowsill in northern Europe, northern US, or Canada?

One has nothing to do with the other. Here in central NY, standard F. benjamina will be in good health all winter a couple of feet from a west window, but the leaves will be large & sparse. F. b. 'TooLittle' will tolerate spending the winter on a windowsill, but does much better under fluorescent lights.
My shohin F. salicaria spends the summer outdoors in full sun. In winter it prefers being raised up just a few inches under the fluorescent tubes. Incidentally, even in a 4-inch (10 cm) pot, it thrives in a coarse, conifer type soil. I want to see what others say before I shoot my mouth off.

Re: Ficus salicaria Exposure
I keep mine in a south facing window through the winter here in IL. I loses most of it leaves and primarily sulks through until spring. I found it didn't do much better under lights, so I'd rather have it somewhere I can look at it.

ditto dready... here in SE wisconsin, both of mine sit in a south facing window
one in front of a flat pane window at my office and the other in a south facing and protruding garden window...
mine get a little mopey and drop some leaves,
but then again, when winter comes, so do i.
and in direct answer to your question iris,
i believe that, despite the orientation of the window, winter in wisconsin counts as "low light levels"
