Measuring pots with large lips
When measuring the dimensions of pots with large lips/rims, do you only measure the inside of the pot as normal and ignore the lips? On some pots the rim can add quite a few cm to the size of the pot, how is this dealt with.

Good day to everyone and apologies in advance for my idiotic question-but I'll still ask, lol.

Bonsai containers are always measured to the outside, not inside by professional bonsai artists.
When viewing the aesthetic beauty of a bonsai, the eye is attracted to the entire container. However, when selecting a container for a tree with an unusual root system the inner dimension may be an important consideration.
That's a good question!

If it is for commissioning a pot for a tree it is always a good idea to ask the potter how they measure the pot though.

Fiona,
That's an EXCELLENT and also important idea! Remember, most potters are NOT bonsai knowledgeable, but think they are. So, you better check if having a container custom made. The potters are most interested in the size and how much the container will shrink when fired. Most measure inside, but we measure on the outside.
Thanks for bringing up this important point I forgot!

Most general potters yes... most bonsai potters I know of are also bonsai growers, not sure how that makes us less knowledgable about bonsai pots than those who just grow trees & want suitable pots to put them in but then again I am no expert in anything.... nor claim to be....
