I normally don't like tanuki, however yours is done in such an unusual way it is very pleasing and interesting.

Agreed. Some times the efforts to do a tanuki tend to look like someone trying to copy a dollar bill using crayons and paper towels.
This one is very nice.

Hmmmm....
What makes a tanuki believable (and "good") is when the living part follows the veins of the dead part, so they appear as one. I wish you had utilized the crevice that moves from the bottom left and then turns right as it flows across the face of the dead wood.
