You really should do the thread graft before leaves pop, though since it is an elm, you probably can just pull the leaves away.

I use new shoots like this with my mulberry to thread graft. I remove the leaves, and the little buds at the base of each leaf are mature enough that they pop well after threaded. It looks like the elm buds are relatively well set, so I was figuring with the elm it too is possible. I'd rather not approach graft and would rather do it now while there is explosive growth. Maybe I will wait a bit longer for it to develop those little buds further.

Thanks for the info. It's turning winter here in East Tennessee and I'm running out of bonsai projects. I was hoping to start a threadgraft to provide a lower branch on a Japanese maple....but will wait until spring.
