I always wondered why is it that we see Ginkgos upright/broom or whatever the form it is.

Because that is it's normal shape in Nature, unless you wire it to look like something else. This Ginkgo looks very Chinese and would surely classify it as a Penjing.

Very different and unusual and that is the way of Penjing. Elms with curvy trunks and so forth. More stylized. Cool.
