Re: New Stone from China
Hi Bill
The collor of the stone is very nice...is it a kind of dahua?...not as usual, but.
Maybe a daiza would be nice if the stone was standing up..last photo has the best collor..let this be the front.
Kind regards Yvonne...how big is it?

The general consensus on the bus was that the second photo would be the front. The stone is 15 cm high, 10 cm wide at the top and 7 cm wide at the bottom, it is 5 cm thick. It is not a large stone, but quite dense and feels heavy. I agree that it needs a proper daiza. I am thinking in the Chinese style

Hi Billy
That would be a nice idea....from the last chinatour, for the last 8 coins in my pocket, did i bring a dahua- stepstone home....I also think a chinese style daiza wood look nice for this stone, but I fear my daiza will end up looking japanese, and therefor have I not made it yet....still thinking ...who will make yours?.
Kind regards Yvonne

Re: New Stone from China
If I keep it simple I hope to try myself. I have some friends with woodworking tools and might ask them to help, but they wouldn't have any idea about mounting a stone. An American artist named Sean Smith will be in Florida later this month and I would like to have him do it but I think the cost would be too much. I have a Dremel tool and a few other basic things.

Re: New stone from China
Mr B Rhodes,
If I may suggest, as you asked.
IMHO...
I see an "Old Female Golden Monkey" matriarch pasted.
Who was the Queen of her clan.
When seen in 2nd orientation;
several light color bite marks can be seen on old dark skin of her face...
now resting in peace.
wound on forehead that killed her
left eye...................................................... right eye
nose
open mouth with tongue
Billy did the best I could with photo you posted
follow peiced pictures top to bottom, left to right
match them to fit in your large picture

Hello Mr. Billy M. Rhodes ,
If we make the 2nd picture ... 90 degree angle rotation and counterclockwise to clockwise... , We will see a picture of a lot of bizarre faces ...
Thanks for your share .

Re: New Stone from China
It would be hard to make a mount that shows the mouth if I use the upright presentation, but since it is a Chinese stone I might get away with a nontraditional mount that leaves the front open.

Re: New Stone from China
Hi Billy
We were given many chinese books on the last tour.....go through them, and find a simple chinese styled daiza...I feel Sunips pretty suggestin is a bit to tiny for a trad. chinese, it is more to the japanese side.
When making the daiza...make sure to sink the stone deep enough into the wood, and make it wobblefree, and standing in the right position, before you begin to work on the surface...afterwards polish it nicely..the stone is very smooth, and need the daiza to be the same
Look forward to see your result
Kind regards Yvonne

Thanks, everyone
I have an idea for a mount, maybe I will get my act together and try it.

Re: New stone from China
Billly it can be easy! very easy,
IMHO Sunip & Ms Yvonne's idea's are great!
Sleeping and laying down are familiar positions!
see here my "sleeping buddha", Chinese as well.
stand style as Sunip has suggested, flat bottom,
and simple sides made easier in Chinese style.
Or something different! still within display guide lines.
Try a small silk fabric pillow filled with sand.
no pattern, plain dark color about 1" thick &
.75" larger than the stone all the way around,
this ones a little short but what I had on hand....
see www.aisekikai.com newsletter Febuary 2012 pg.4
for better details, reasons, history and rules.

To use a pillow for a stone, is a VERY old chinese tradition.

Re: New stone from China
Thank You Ms Yvonne! "exactly as you say!"...
Billy even folded fabric or suede has been used by many,
was practical "at first when wood was not my thing"
Your cotton towel use was very intuitive and a wise start...
Flat bottom and shape make this possible and VERY decipherable!
IMHO this consept is perfect for your stone, "monkey dreams"
adds to the image and also helps convey a theme..

Very informative thread.
The guy in the link uses a polymer clay daiza. Any reasons why not?

Woe there partner!
Now that's a horse of a different color!
and a true can of worms...
as many opinions as there are collectors,
in mine! NO not that I can think of!
but many will have you believe and tell you otherwise!
IMHO for your specific stone I would have none or several.
Your stone has many faces, fronts if you will!, so many possible choices...
If you have time? make them, If you have money have them made!
if not so much into the stone, use other options, there are many.
As we have mentioned on this thread
Read on and learn as much as possible, will make things intense...
If you like the newsletter? kick them down the ten bucks and
your information. Hard copy, email or just check in at your leisure.
Totally worth it...
