I've participated in this event a handful of times and it is quite informative for the newby as well as fun and interesting for the more seasoned bonsaist. In short, I highly recommend the event.
Thanks,
David

I think when you look at major sports, many all star prospects go thru the same training period, year after year after year.
It just reminds and confirms certain details of their game. I think the same mentality should apply to even the most seasoned repotter.
Tuesday, I helped redo a giant slab, that took three people to remove the trees from the slab. I don't do slabs that often so it was a great re-learning process. Wish I lived closer. don't forget to wear green on st patties day

Anyone know if they are having a repotting workshop this spring? I heard a rumor that the big spring show wasn't being run by PBS this year.

The PBA Festival is purportedly not being held this year because the ABS Learning Symposium will be in June in Ellicott City. The thought is that PBA didnt want to upstage ABS by bringing in speakers and vendors that might reduce attendance and spending at the ABS event just a few weeks later. The new PBA President is looking into other smaller event(s) just to keep up local interest and participation withing PBA members.
The PBA website guy recently told us that he expects to update the site soon, as well as write a new issue of Clippings.

At the PBA BoD meeting yesterday, it was announced that PBA plans to hold only a fall event. A Japanese talent yet to be named will be arranged for perhaps two workshops in September(?). Most of PBA energies will go to promote and staff the ABS event in June. You may have to rely on NVBS events to get repotting done in a group setting. If that wont work for you, send me a PM and I'll let you know what Brookside has planned, where you are welcomed to visit and/or join. This year will be very fluid in terms of regular meetings so as to conserve resources and funds to help with the ABS event.

Re: Bonsai Repotting Workshop at the National Arboretum
Thanks for the update. I actually just became a board member for the NVBS, so I suppose I should know what is going on, but it took me a while to come to terms with not having the PBA Spring show at the Arboretum. With a recent addition to our family, I don't think I'll have the time or money to make it to Ellicot City for the show this year.
I have an Eastern hemlock(Tsuga canadensis) that I collected a couple years ago that grew quite vigorously last year that I really need to get into a shallower pot. I have a large training pot and some good "soil" ready for it, and would actually be pretty comfortable doing it myself, but whenever I imagine doing the repotting, I imagine having Jack Sustic there to walk me through the operation.
I just found this link on the NBF site https://www.bonsai-nbf.org/event/bonsai-repotting-workshop-temperate-trees/ so, I may be in luck if I can work this in to my spring travel schedule.

Re: Bonsai Repotting Workshop at the National Arboretum
Congratulations on becoming a board member of your club as well as on your family's newest member, MrFancyPlants. There is a discrepancy on the date of the workshop between the NBF website (presently noting March 15th) & the USNA website (noting March 22nd). You can register (directly online or by downloading a form) following the workshop description on the USNA website-- http://www.usna.usda.gov/Education/events.html#March
The Museum events calendar coordinator confirmed he March 22nd date by phone. See you there!
FWIW, I think this thread should be in the "Announcements" forum rather than in the "Bonsai Discussion" forum. If posted there, the stale discussion of past years' scheduling would be weeded-out after each event.
