Re: Turface confusion
I was originally using just grit and DE, but the DE is so white and I don't like the look. I planned to use just the calcined clay and grit, but didn't want to waste all the DE. I started reading about water retention and cation exchange capacity of different soil components. Comparing the DE to the calcined clay, one holds more water than the other while the other has a better cation exchange capacity. The difference is minuscule, but using both cancels out the difference, plus it looks better. The bark has a much higher CEC and water retention value, plus microorganisms in it help the tree process nutrients. The grit is a little heavier and I like it in the pot because my trees are all small and don't have much weight. It makes them feel more stable. That's pretty much my thinking. Sorry for the rushed response, I'm typing this from my phone.

Re: Turface confusion
No worries. I wasn't offended, but I could see how it could be taken as such. It's hard to get someone's tone through text alone sometimes.
Something I forgot to mention is that about a third of the NAPA bag ends up being fines while maybe a quarter of the Diamond Pro is fines. The NAPA is half the price of the DP, so in the end they make about the same amount of useful material when getting a couple bags of each.
