Storm in NE USA
Best wishes to all in the Mid-Atlantic States and Northeast who appear to be ground zero for the "Frankenstorm." For those elsewhere, Hurricane Sandy (with a storm-wind diameter of more than 1,000 miles) is heading for the US East Coast, while a large cole front approaches from the west. The two are slated to meet over New Jersey, creating the Mother of all Storms that may hang around for a week or more before drifting north into Canada.

Yes, good luck to those especially in the direct path and in low lying areas prone to flooding. We're already seeing some small effect of it here. The mentioned cold front passed through heading west yesterday but is now being pushed back east and stalling on top of us. Been raining for a day and a half and they're calling for 90% chance of precipitation for the next 3 days.

Gusts to 50mph forecast for us here in Upstate NY, which is strong enough for me to want to strap the beehives down.
With several inches of torrential rain on the way, saturated pots with dormant trees in them is more of a concern for me then the wind. So the trees were moved under my 2ft overhang up against the house about an hour ago. They'll stay out of the worst of it in that location.
My 'Yankee weather bone' tells me this is going to be a nasty storm.

Yes, best of luck to all over there. Hope it passes quickly and with minimal damage.

Re: Storm in NE USA
Although we won't be hit as hard as the coastal regions, this will be a unique storm for this area. Strongest winds will be from the N-NE and with all that open water (Lake Ontario) to the north, gusts to 65+ mph are likely, especially near the coast (I'm 10 miles inland). Fortunately most landscape trees have dropped the majority of their leaves, but this is not a normal wind direction and significant tree damage is expected. I'll be moving the bonsai to sheltered locations today...

I hope everyone in the path of the storm will check in here and let us know they're OK (as soon as electrical power is restored).

Re: Storm in NE USA
finallyyyy just got power back and internet and television came back 20 min ago. god it feels good to have electricity. i bought a generator before the storm and within 36 hours it blew up. changed the oil every 16 hours and babied the thing and both valve springs shattered. went to go borrow my buddies generator, got back home to having power, turned back around and brought it back. i havent been this happy in a longggg time. i love electricity and not having to poop by candle light.

LOL Stagz! Don't mean to laugh at your misfortune but the way you wrote that made me laugh. Glad you can have a good sense of humour about it. Did you have much damage to home or trees?

Re: Storm in NE USA
haha its all good. laughter makes everything better. no damage to my home, my neighbor had a hugeee maple crush right through his living room. completely destroyed the house. i had a large branch break off a tree in my back yard but that was about it. i got all my trees into my garage so they were fine, my trees in the ground were fine also, i build a hut for each one out of plywood so they survived without a scratch also. thanks for asking!

Storm didn't hit upstate NY. We just got rain. Patrizia Kane on Staten Island is OK, but I haven't been able to get hold of Carl Rosner in South Jersey.

Let's pray that's just because the power is out.

Re: Storm in NE USA
We had about 8 hours of 50-60 mph wind gusts around Rochester Monday night. Some tree and powerline damage especially near the lake shore, but pretty minor overall.bonsaisr wrote:Storm didn't hit upstate NY. We just got rain. Carl's trees were untouched. New York City is in a terrible state. My cousin's daughter, who lives in lower Manhattan, was stranded in NJ until her power flickered on. I hope the buses are running to get her home.
