Juniper - second restying
Dear IBC members.
This is a short history of my juniper which was first styled in spring 2010.
2010-04 - Starting material
2010-05 - After first syling
The result of the first styling was pleasing at the moment, but later on i was less and less happy with the image of the tree. The tree was neglected for a while and this year i decided to work on it again. My first plan was to develop it further in the direction of the first styling, but whatever i did it didn't look good. At a workshop of the TORA group we had a discussion and at the end Tomaž Kovšca gave me the idea to work only with the first right branch and this was the trigger of the second restyling.
2012-09 - before the second restyling
2012-09 - after the second restyling
The jins on the left side will be smaller in the future and i also plan to ad a shari, but owerall im much mora happy with this direction. Please let me know your opinion.
Regrads, roland

Very nice tree. I would let the top go [jin] and keep the tree size as exactly on the last picture. Nebari is great and like this size tree has very dramatic movement.

Thank you guys for all the nice words.3
The only thing that concerns me is, if it will be possible to create nice compact foliage pads with this species of juniperus.
I think that a nice and precise foliage definition will be needed in the future to make this tree really convincing.
regards, roland

Re: Juniper - second restying
in my opinion create compact foliage is possible on this species of juniper (I thing is juniperus media). I had in my collection many bonsai and materials of this species or similar , in my country acquired good material like itoigawa or other Japanese species is very difficult and expensive, that many enthusiast starts his bonsai way using local species of juniperus acquired in garden centres. that species you had is better for bigger bonsai but is possible to create good shohin bonsai. for example my j.pfizeriana about 30 cm. simple little tree
I hope you are not angry for my pictures in your post

Hi Sebastian.
Nice tree, thanks for sharing, do you use some special pruning regime to achieve such nice foliage ot just regular pruning?
Greeting to Poland, please pass my greetings to Marek, Jacek and Marta.
cheers, roland

Of course I pass Yours greetings as soon as we meet with Marek
To create compact foliage first I pruning strong shoots with scissors on the whole tree and next I pinch fingers the long " roller needles " to create dense pads it is advisable that move tree to shade for some time after shear and spray water, if tree back straight away to sun ends of needles may can brown
