a pretty tokoname pot.......but not sure if i have a tree for it?
Hi,
My local nursery owner has put some of his pots from under the counter up for sale
This one has often caught my eye - the glaze is aging beautifully and I love the simple clean shape.
it is Kouyou (koyu) made by Aiba Kouichirou and has been at my local nursery 20+ years, when it came in with a tree long since sold. Question is............what to plant in it?

(had to draw over chop on photoshop - hard to see)
cheers for looking, what would you put in it?

Hi Marcus
I do not have a sufficient experience about pot-tree selection, but I feel that (imho) this glaze and color would seem nice with a blooming tree
(a bougainvillea may be?)

I think the right Juniper would work.

Perhaps, an "orange-red" bloom... see its opposite on a color wheel-- e.g. http://realcolorwheel.com/tubecolors.htm.

What size is it? I will see if I have a tree that fits.

Nice pot. I recently bought a similar Koyo, also oval, but straight-sided and footed, with more blue and less fleck. It was purchased in anticipation of a Chinese Quince growing out in the ground. It still needs one more year in the ground, so I can enjoy the pot on my shelves inside for a few months first!

I think I can see a nice, old satsuki in that pot...nice.

I think it's the perfect maple pot. BUY IT!

hi everyone,
it is 18"x14" and i did get it as I had traded in 4 trees so had some credit.
An old heavy trunked quince would be a great tree for it, but as I dont have one of them
I plan to put my satsuki in it. Peter Warren Pointed out i had it potted at the shallow limit atm - and it does dry out a little too easily on hot windy days, so the slightly deeper pot will act as the perfect reservoir.
It is such an adaptable pot though - i could see many deciduous well trunked trees looking good in it.
thanks for the suggestions

Hi Marcus
I have bought a big older pot from the same maker this summer...same glaze, but not exacly the same shape...
I am planning to pot, either a hawthorn, or a acer campestre, both with massive trunks, in it....in 10 years time, if the tree does not dissappoint, do I have a red acer for the pot.
Kind regards Yvonne

Exactly what I was thinking. A maple in there would look awesome.
Have a great week!!!!

Absolutely beautiful pot!! Can I have it?
I have a 'wakaebisu' azalea that would look great in that pot . . . in about 20 years. Something with salmon flowers (quince as you suggested, oh but to find one large enough) would look stunning. Next best, IMHO would be something pink. Red, being opposite on the color wheel, is too dynamic of a combination for me for an entire tree, but a few red fruit . . . A nice buttery yellow fall color, like ginkgo or some hawthorns, perhaps. Please let us know when you find something, and if you can't, my address is . . .

I put a friend's beautiful ginkgo in the rectangle version of the same pot!
