Hydroton as growing medium? Empty Hydroton as growing medium?

Post  EpicusMaximus Thu Aug 30, 2012 6:06 pm

Hello,

I'm in the Ottawa area in Canada and I have been unable to find Akadama, Turface or Schultz aquarium soil to try with my juniper.

However, I've found Hydroton products which is similar to Akadama from what I read, except it's man made?

Anybody have experience using this?

After advice I've received here and found online I am thinking a mix of Hydroton, shredded bark and coarse sand would work well.

Any opinions?

Good news, I was able to find Turface.

If anybody in the Ottawa region is looking they have some at Ritchie's Feed and Seed.

Good stuff!

Make sure you get the largest particle possible of Turface, some of it is much too fine for anything but oil spills.
