Chinese Elm? Not too sure
So I picked up this 'little tree' today. I was told that it was a chinese elm, but the leaves do not look anything like the chinese elm that I used to have (RIP). Is this just a different type of elm, or something different altogether. Thanks in advance!
The 'whole' tree
The leaves are smoother than the chinese elm I used to have. It had a jagged edge instead of a smooth edge.

Yep, looks like a Serissa. I hate them, very temperamental trees. They seem to like to die if light and humidity levels aren't what they want them to be at. I've given up on trying to grow them

I forgot to mention that even though the tree is at a relatively young age, it already has some "peeling" bark. Is this another characteristic of Serissa?

Chinese Elm?
I agree it looks like a Serissa. Put it in some sun. It should bloom soon. Are you sure you want to tie it in a knot like that? Get some bonsai books out of the library & get some ideas on styling.

Hmm, I'm not sure the bark is dark enough to be Pomegranate. It's light enough to be Serissa, at least.

What is wrong with the "knot"? It's mostly the reason I chose this tree. I had not seen something like this before, and I thought it looked neat and different.

Chinese Elm?
It's your tree. There is no dispute about tastes. But before you make it permanent, view our galleries and photos from bonsai shows. As I said, get some bonsai books out of the library and see what the world's finest bonsai look like. Then decide.
