Formal display/ rock planting ?
My bonsai club is preparing for our annual show which is judged and a question has arisen about how to display a large rock/shimpaku planting in a water filled suiban.
Will a stand or slab be necessary under the suiban and what about accents ?
Your thoughts?

How large? Personally, I think all bonsai should be displayed on something. In this case a wood slab would seem the most (preferably a natural burl) appropriate.
A rush or a grass-like plant might be a nice accent for a watery display.

I agree with Jim in regard to a wood slap. Something with soft edges. I think the color of the rock and tree should really decide the grasses or what ever accent you choose.
I recently saw a large slab display using plastic robot action figures for a accent. Wish I had the pic.
