I need help with my lilac

I'm not very familiar with how to get a lilac to grow foliage back further on the trunk. I got this plant about a year ago. I cut the roots down and did a lot of hard pruning last spring when I got it. I'm wondering if it's ok to cut it back even further and how to keep the branches from growing so long as they have. I'd like to turn this into a nice shohin tree. Any advice would be much appreciated.

You have nice vigorous growth taking place right now, so I would leave it alone this season and build up vigor and bulk. Cut it back hard in the spring and you should get new buds. The base of your tree is very nice.
