Has my Acer Palmatum died?
Hi
My acer has not produced any leave since it dropped them for winter. Do you think it had died or still dormant?
Thanks for reading. K

Re: Has my Acer Palmatum died?
hi Kaza, welcome to the forum
i'll stick my neck out - it is dead
just to check though scrape a little bark off - if it is brown underneath it is dead, if it is bright breen its alive, but unlikely. Another check is to snap a tip off a twig - if its dry, brittle and brown its dead
cheers Marcus

Re: Has my Acer Palmatum died?
we call it 'Permanent dormancy' and it's all part of growing Bonsai.
I have 5 members of an American Beech forest I was particularly fond of that are all "permanently dormant'...oh well start again!

you'll get value for money from it - and pride & enjoyment. If it really gets you other hobbies will fade away, and i've sold nearly all my other spare things on ebay so there is no clutter in the house, loft or garage any more.............
haha, it makes you good at saving up too, i think thats the best way to think about it.
cheers Marcus

Marcus is right, and it's funny when you really sit down and think about it.
Many species used in Bonsai will easily out live you, so with care you'll be able to enjoy your tree and your hobby quite literally for the rest of your life. Thats excellent value for money even with a high end tree..
Arguments like the one above may even work on the "value conscious" significant other in your life who may question why someone (like yourself) might buy a several hundred dollar potted plant...You sit them down and explain how its "good value for money"...Just like when you buy the 'Family' size bag of cereal...
yeah.....good value for money......what could possibly go wrong?

..good thing we don't have dormancy on this part of the world.........what we are getting are shari and jins from roots to twigs.
...Sorry for the tree btw. that is part of the game. just move on and don't be discouraged.
regards,
jun
