Looking for some suggestions or ideas for hiding or altering larger scars. I have a tree that I really see potential in but the tree has several large pruning scars where the previous owner had removed branches in not the cleanest way. Aside from carving some of them out to create a knot or whole effect in the trunk are there any other methods to make these look a bit cleaner

hi,
it depends on the species but many trees will heal if you neatly hollow the scar and allow free growth above, sometimes you need to re-wound the edges a few times to keep it forming callous.

You can choose a new front so they are off to the side or round the back, you can hide them with branches or foliage - it all depends on the species and the style the tree will become really.

now a little 'secret' method used quite often - you can make a patch of the same bark, trim it exactly to size and glue it on - works very well on pines or rough plated barked trees.

cheers Marcus
