I think it is protection from caterpillars that would climb the tree and damage the needles.

The trees I've seen were wrapped in bundles of rice straw. I was told it was for cold-weather protection.

Hello,
When you see skirt like wrappings on the trunk, it is like Billy mentioned.
When the tree is wrapped totally, it is as Jim mentioned i belief.

could have used some yuki zuni on my trees in my japanese garden today. We ended up getting about 10 inches of heavy snow, weighing down the limbs. The last couple seasons we have not gotten any snow and i got lazy. Fingers crossed for luck that none of the branches break. I did get out once and try and shake off some of the excess.
all this to say the only time I saw straw wraps on pines in japan was for winter protection.

I think it is the same reason why the Israeli's paint the bottom half of the fruit trees white, its to prevent ants from climbing the tree and spread scale and Aphids.

I am not sure of the question. I didn't get real close to examine the wrapping material but if I had to guess I would saw a natural product like raffia was used to wrap. But, it is not for any training purpose.
