Pretty, but not what we temperate dwellers call a "crabapple" (Mallus). Is it a Malpighia?

You are right, this is Malpighia glabra.

My friend called it crabapple but all of you are right..it is a Malpighia glabra other names acerola, Barbados cherry,
West Indian cherry and wild crapemyrtle.

don't say sorry...you are also right. Your tree is also commonly called here as "crab apple". or were mistakenly called as crab apple...and thru time were accepted as a common name for the specie. some people even called it "false crab apple".
That is the reason for having a Latin name for each specie, Common name may also varies from place to place or even one country may have a different common name referring to the same Latin name /specie.

Good point Jun! Latin names are ALWAYS helpful, but I know that's not always easy especially in tropical areas where plants most of us have never seen go by local names like "cohhkiglrejdbnqp".

I know the Latin name for that Russ.
it's "Lxzytuklinr vikltydnqspolica" it got yellow flowers, big alternate leaves on the left side branches and smaller leaves on the right side branches.


but seriously speaking though, most species here got Latin names that are next to impossible to find. Some species were used for bonsai purposes ever since the birth of bonsai here in our country but up to now Latin names are still not clear...like the "Murraya sp." which we commonly posted here, I certainly believe now it doesn't belong to the Murraya family.
