Who Said Maui Doesn't Snow......
Howzit All,
It's January 19 2011, 07:30 in the morning and there's snow on top of Haleakala Volcano. This was shot from my condo facing the volcano. If you look at the left you can see the rain storm falling on the slopes. Haleakala is 10,000ft. high and when the conditions are right, like last night we had a cold front that past by you get snow.

This was taken at about 2500 foot level. I wanted to go higher but I found out the they closed the roads to Haleakala because as soon as the people found out the there was snow, all the tourist and about half the locals wanted to go up and play with the Hawaiian snow.... God Help Us!!
A Hui Hou,
-Tim

Pschhhh!!! Call that snow? More like dandruff!
I shouldn't laugh as we get as excited as that when someone catches a rare glimpse of that big yella thing - what's it called again? Oh yeah - the sun.

There was about a week a while back when there was snow on the ground in every state but Florida -- that includes Hawaii -- which is almost inside the tropics. But I guess there's snow on Mauna Kea on the Big Island every winter.

In Alaska, that's what's known as "Termination Dust". It's time to terminate your summer (about the end of August) and get to where you are going to be for the winter that is right around the corner. Beautiful to see anywhere --- but Hawaii??!!!

Better put your trees down, Tim. You don't want them to get cold!

Mauna Kea is about 4000 feet higher then Haleakala so it always has snow during winter.

Steve, Fiona,
today is sunny on the horizon, I worked my butt off in Mayaro at the second house, all that rain and tons of green, mowing, weedwacking and pruning of the temporary, weed trees. Today, home, I am resting with a full stand of small to mame' Bonsai repotting. I have about 4 hours before I lose my shade spot in the yard, under the avocado tree.
I batched soil late yesterday under the setting sun and am ready to go. Been testing soil for the smaller trees, so far, they seem to love it.
AND it is cool, mild breezes, with one or two running showers after 12 last night. If I lived up on your side, I would have built a low tech, large green house to keep going. chuckle.
