Air layering boxwood

Any experience or advice on the best timing and technique for air layering a boxwood that has a nice top and bottom, but one long, slender trunk I would like to sever into into two plants would be appreciated.

In the early spring -- as always. No special technique needed.

Thank you Jim. Any idea how long to expect before the air layer could be sectioned off a boxwood? All growing season, more, less? Failures I've read about seem to be tied to not giving the layer enough time to establish the new roots. Is it purely visual - lots of roots meaning its safe to cut the air layer? Alternately, can boxwood be grafted?

I'd wait until the plastic wrap is filled with roots. You are far north of me, so that probably would be some time in the fall, which means you would have to give the separated section a lot of winter protection -- like in a greenhouse.

I have absolutely no idea whether boxwood can be grafted. Sorry. They grow nicely from cuttings, however -- FWIW.

Thanks Jim, it was that timing and the after care I wanted to know about before subjecting the tree the the process and waiting for a result.

Yes. I've grafted many on several boxwood of mine. They surprisingly take easily.
