Post  marcus watts Mon Nov 26, 2012 6:19 pm

Hi everyone,

I have an as yet unworked yamadori juniper with grafted itiogawa foliage that came into Europe directly from the japanese nursery a few years ago.

The tree is still in the original pot and it has a long 'signature' that I would love to know a little more about if anyone can help please. The pics are 'as is', with chalk dust and the actual pot.

As always thanks so much for any asistance

Well, well, well, Marcus. You've got yourself a real gem there. Don't know what you paid for the tree, but that pot's worth a bundle. Japanese, made by Nakano Yuuji of the Gyozan kiln. The absolute pinnacle of unglazed Tokoname pots. Tiny ones retail for 50k¥, I'd say this one is much much more. I've similiar ones for sale from Kinbon in the 150k¥ range.

haha, hi Hans.

very good Very Happy Very Happy ......in this case i was VERY happy to lose a few grains of soil to find out about the pot (it isn't freshly repotted either Smile ) - the tree and pot had quite a journey - Mario Komsta bought the tree back from one of his japanese trips, then it was for sale at the Noelanders sales area, it went from there to England and a few years later to me. Best part is that the tree has remained unstyled and luckily for me the pot value has not really been realised or added to the tree cost at any stage Very Happy

cheers

I THINK this pot made by Nakano Yukizo Gyozan himself, not his son Yuji. And the kugibori(nail signature) can be read as follows.
Rifght: His Imperial Majesty
Middle: Commemoration for the Emperor's accession for the imperial throne
Left: Nakano Gyozan made

I believe this pot made when the Emperor Akihito had acceded to the throne.

Beautiful pot. Thanks for sharing Smile

It's entirely possible that's it's Yukizou, not Yuuji. While I've seen Yuuji pots signed both "Nakano Yuuji" and "Nakano Gyozan" (with and without the Yuuji stamp), it is true that both father and son used "Nakano Gyozan" in nail signatures. I just thought this signature looked more like Yuuji than Yukizou I've seen, which have more astringent lines.
So that gives you an idea of date Marcus, 1990(which doesn't tell us anything about father or son, as Yukizou would have been 50 at this time, and Yuuji 30).

I have had the pleasure of visiting Gyozan on several occasions, even made tiles at his kiln-never could afford a hand built pot of his or Jujis for that matter, but do have some molded pots -once bought one, that was "used" he told me it would not be less just because he used it-I told him, he should charge more-am now desperately trying to post a picture, I took last year-been at it for hours, excuse me if it doesn't work-there MUST be an easier way!kora

Comeon guys, putting photos up on the IBC is NOT rocket science. Every forum has a different way to upload pics that is dependent upon the software that runs the forum. (You do NOT want to go through the hassle and risk of switching from one software program to another and losing much (everything) we have here. Besides, every forum's software has its own set of idiosyncrasies -- believe me!)

We have several thousand members. Excluding perpetual lurkers, it is quite clear from all the excellent pictures on the IBC that pictures get posted here with no problems. There is a step-by-step process explained at https://ibonsaiclub.forumotion.com/t243-tutorial-on-posting-pics that makes it easy. If THIS old geezer can do it -- and can even write a tutorial on doing it! -- surely others can master it as well.

Very Happy Very Happy
