a display from the North West's artistry of Dan Robinson
This is a current display at the pacific rim bonsai center at Weyerhaueser in federal Way, Washington. I'll add more trees as we go along. this was my favorite, a shore pine from our neck of the woods that was yamadori dug

He's a true genius and certainly one of the most inspiring artists. When I see his work it represents to me again and again some of the best examples of bonsai that appear never to have been touched by a man's hand...but I don't know about the pot; I keep putting my hand over it to block it out and just take in the tree.

the detail on the top edge of the pot is like a gigantic crackle, flakey and matches beautifully with the bark. Sorry it doesn't sho as nice in the photo as it appears.

Dick
Thank you for posting these ... Vic and I were up at the Rim to see the exhibit this past weekend. As Daniel's first students we were excited to see the display looking gorgeous. The trees chosen make for a diverse sampling of Daniel's technique and design sense and showcase the ideas he teaches. Vic took some additional pictures and hopefully she will post them either tomorrow or Thurs. I was of course most excited to see a "homework" tree I had styled on display (the hornbeam from this thread )
For all those not familiar with Daniel you can take this opportunity to get better acquainted and get a signed copy of Gnarly Branches Ancient Trees (written by our friend and bonsai cohort Will Hiltz with photographs by both Vic and Will)
If you are in the area stop the Pacific Rim Collection and have a look ... then continue on your way to Elandan to the rest of the collection. Also if you are going to be at the ABS convention in Denver I can assure you that you can look forward to a fantastic demo and workshops with Daniel, and I hope to see you there!!
(I know I prolly sound like a saleman sorry )

I admit I didn't know about Daniel Robinson and now I want to know much more about his work.

Yes, indeed! This is a fine rectangular pot, lovely crackled texture and excellent colour for my personal taste. Matching so very well the bark!dick benbow wrote:I thought this tree had the most fabulous pot that was so complimentary

I wanted to make sure for those who found it impossible to attend the display to be able to get a taste of it!
And i wanted to acknowledge the work Dan has accomplished and contributed to our hobby.

i do too. If i had to try and discribe why, it's because I believe his trees capture the natural look of grace that mother nature puts into them instead of some manmade elements that don't quite feel natural.

this tree is one of dan's ponderosa's. after he dug it and went to lift it out of the hole, he disovered the tree seemed extra heavy. Inspection showed it had grown over and included a sizeable rock. You have to inspect the back of this tree to see it

Dan's new book, "Gnarly branches, Ancient trees" is a great book. Plus it does have a lot of photos of his trees.
I've always liked his work.
