satsukimania.net HD pruning video
This isn't mine. This is by a satsuki bonsai nursery in Japan. But since it was posted on a Japanese site I think not many of you will naturally find it. HD bonsai videos by Japanese on youtube are still kind of rare. It doesn't have any commentary. But still, here you go.

I suspect they will be putting out more youtube videos in the future.
Since this isn't mine and I want to give credit while due, I put their site on the title. I hope this isn't considered spammy.

Amazing to see the reduction; I loved watching him apply the cut paste too. I would like to see this tree in the next few years to see how he develops the foliage pads. Remarkable video. Thank you for sharing.
Best,
Todd

Hello Glaucus,
Thanks for the link.
Here we see a drastic pruning to bring a healthy tree in a next step.
There is another video on youtube of the trimming of a smaller satsuki from Satsukimania.
Todd, in another tread we saw how he is using an ordinary bath tube silicon as cutting paste.

I like it so much more before he starts pruning. The 'Komei' flowers are very nice, the lush fresh R.indicum type leaves. When he is finished it is merely a bonsai.
I noticed he now also sells whips to the EU. Some individual plants are only 13 or 20 euro. But it costs 350 to put together one packet. So really you need like 20 or 30 people. And then they also need to be send across Europe to their owner. So I guess it is hard to get it really cheap. But it does seem like a good way to introduce new cultivar to Europe.

This is the second time this week I here about this. The other sourze showed a picture of a product called "Joint caulk" - is that the same type of product? Anyone tried this? (on a tree, that is...)

Hello Ingvar,
The name suggest the same, as it caulks joints.
I find on my imported satsuky a silicon like substance on wounds who did the job very well.
So i am planning to start with a brown colored version of the stuff on my trees.
I hope somebody can tell more?

Thank you Sunip,
This is good info as I've got a 5 minute walk to the nearest hardware store and the "bonsai" cut paste has to be imported. I think I have a tube in my basement. I will definitely try this on a few trees this spring. I think I need to look for some wood hardener too.

Re: satsukimania.net HD pruning video
I was just watching the video and it confused me even more, are azaleas supposed to be pruned that hard every year? and you always have to follow the rule of only two leaves on a branch? what time of year are you supposed to do that kind of pruning.

Re: satsukimania.net HD pruning video
The azalea is neither supposed to look like it looks before or after. He let it grow out wild. Then he cut it back hard. And he removed some branches that are too thick and did their job creating the desired taper.
If it were to be put on display he would do something completely different.
