White tips on junipers
I have some junipers that have white on the foliage tips . Just the tips not the interior foliage. I checked for spider mites and don'y find any. Is there a fungus that would do this? If so, what should I spray them with?

I can't tell you what that is, but I wouldn't worry. Those juniper look very healthy.

It looks to me like die back from being sheared maybe with a mechanical shear. (as in electric)

Tona,
Definately a variegated variety! Some varieties have yellow variegation, other varieties have white variegation. I have a yellow variegated specimen in my landscape and love it!
Best,
Todd

Tona,
As Todd says, it's definitely a variegated variety. Maybe this one. Kaizuka

The Juniper mentioned in the original post is posted "Off Site" and does not look variegated to me. I think Todd and Ian are reacting to a photo posted on site.

I think Billy may be right. You could bring in a branch or two and let me get a better look and I may be able to better tell you what's up. They look like shore junipers.

Hi Bob,
They are all procumbens. I have 5 large ones that I am getting ready to dig up (garden yamadori lol). The gardeners have gotten them once or twice. They aren't suppose to touch them but I'm not always home. I think Billy is partially right. I got a tip on another site that the over-spray from sprinklers may be causing calcium deposits (hard water here). I hosed them off with a strong stream of water and it seems to be gone. Hopefully that is all there is to it.

I suspect when the plants dry out again the white will be back. Hard water stains would be more than on the tips.

Thanks Billy,
I'm going to take a cutting to someone and see if I need to spray them or not. They are in the front and my Bonsai trees in the back yard. I don't want to dig them up and move them to pots in the back yard until I confirm that there is no fungus or bug infestation.

If you have the luxury of waiting, I'd suggest a good pruning and thinning out, then fertilize well and dig late next fall. That way you'll get lots of new growth popping off the trunks and insides of branches. Get some air and light in there, feed well and they'll back bud profusely .

Re: White tips on junipers
Just a follow up. I had a local nursery owner who I believe is knowledgeable look at some branches that I brought in. He concluded that that it was "pine moths". The tips were white with an "exploded" look to them. He sold me a systemic insectacide to get rid of them.

Problem: I can find NO reference to pine tip moths attacking Juniperus, either on line, or in my text references, including US Forest Service publications. Neither do I find reference to similar insects that attack juniper rather than pines.

Hi Jim,
I did a lot of research also and found the same. Hopefully the product I used will alleviate the problem even if I was misinformed.
I did find this info on "Cypress tip moths". Sounds similar as far as white cocoons etc.

Re: White tips on junipers
I think you may have either a fungal infection , mechanical damage or the tree may have a virus and is variegating- I've had that happen to a couple of junipers this year. I'd hold off on spraying until you know what you're spraying for.

Always good advice. I'd add only "if anything."

Everyone is guessing. Take a branch to your county agricultural extension agent. He should know what the problem is.
