I think the shape dictates a standing position. To me the stone looks awkward lying on its side.

you image stone to me is of Monterrey Cypress trees,
growing off and on tall cliffs near the ocean,
as seen at California cost line, both close and distance views.
as bonus a wiseman can be seen on right side, in shelter.
