when to trunk chop a maple
I have a maple growing in the ground and what to trunk chop it then let it grow wild then do the same thing again the following year. I'm still new and have only done tropicals, my guess would be to do it early spring but would like to know?

Re: when to trunk chop a maple
Unlike many other deciduous trees Maples are best hard pruned either just after leaf drop or in mid summer when the growth slows down, I would do a trunk reduction in early to mid summer.
If you chop it in early spring you will find out why we tap maples in March for sap. The tree will probably exhaust the roots out by bleeding sap. What kind of maple is it?
