Probably not. Use chopped bark. Your soil mix depends on where you live, & to some extent the type of tree you are potting. Contact the nearest bonsai club & find out what they use.

best thing i ever saw cocopeat used for with pumice, was to start cuttings. I did like 60 chojubai starts and they all made it. I have to second Iris's recommendation. Very Happy

Yes,

but in the tropical climate, it soon loses it's bulk and decomposes. So I blend it with some compost and leave it to age [ decompose ]
Used for sterile, hydroponics.

Pines - freely draining soil [ 70 % inorganic ]

Hello,
Chopped bark is my favourite for pine and juniper to ad in the mix, but i use cocopeat to.
Be prepared it will mould a bit during the first weeks but it disappears soon.
The mix should be free draining, like already mentioned it depends a bit on where you live.

The commercial soil mix I use with some trees has replaced milled Canadian Peat with Coir which is fine coconut fiber. It does break down quickly in a hot climate.

hi , pine bark is better for pines i agree, if you cannot get it why not use chopped coconut, i buy it here and its in 1/2 inch chunks and does not break down as quick, mixed with brick bits it should be good. john

After trying everything I can find for substrate, I've finally hit what looks like a winner. Crushed ceramic (Aquarium filtration media) and crushed brick @80% and cocopeat @ 20%. I then mulch the surface with cocofirbre or sphagnum. I live in a HOT AND HUMID climate though. I', only really growing Ficus and Olives though, with a few exceptions.

Coco peat is helpful for the soil conditioning and it has a slow degradation rate. Because of this reason it is beneficial in the growth of the plants. Anapainse is absolutely correct I am already using it in my garden from last 6 months. And after using it I have seen a wonderful result .
