Re: big yew we dug out
Great find. And great timing. I'd like to know a bit about yew collecting. I noticed you dug and cut back, leaving some green.
I know they will bud back, but if collected in spring, how well do they respond to a hard cut back with little/no foliage and root disturbance?
Are there other good times of year for collecting aside from spring?
Whats the best practice for ensuring recovery?
Thanks, great tree, congratulations!
Neil

Re: big yew we dug out
to be honest, with 2 man it came out in 1 our, it was very easy digging, but after that came the hardest part.
getting it on trailer wagon, and after that getting it in a box.
but i don't complain we had a lot of fun.

Very nice tree, but... might this be a "Taxus media 'Hicksii'", a pillar yew?
They grow only straight upwards!

Lets hope its not a Hicksii. In my experience they are poor bonsai material. Not only do they grow straight up, but the young twigs are thick so even the 1-2 year old growth is tough to bend.
I've given up on mine and will be trying to get rid of it at the next club sale, after 4 years of frustration.

Ye Gods Eric! That's one big ass tree you have there, my friend! I suspect you didn't think it would only take 1 hour to collect it, eh? Unless you had a mechanical digger, that is, lol.
As is usually the case, the digging is the easy part. The picking it up and moving it is another thing altogether. Just be grateful you didn't have to carry it down from a mountain!
Keep us updated on its progress, Eric.
Take care... Steve

Hi Erik
I like the tree...But is it a good idea to dig up a tree like this, or any tree, at this time of year.?
Kind regards Yvonne
