Hi Bob,
Thanks. I think it is John's best one so far too. He's very talented I think at making these.
PS I believe that he has made Mame sized netaku too !?

Some tiddlers for Bob
Bob I was telling Mark earlier that I'd made some smaller bits a couple of years ago.
I've just taken them out of storage and taken a few pics for your perusal, these were early days and not enough time was spent on refinement but they whet my appetite
The woods used are Hawthorn & Ash, both trees are growing in / taking over my garden....I keep hinting to my missus but she's still using the "I don't like heights" excuse for not felling the tops of the bloody things.
I managed to retain some original bark on all 3 stands, (not sure if that's frowned upon) which I thought added character, I also carved into the edges to imitate bark texture, the colours a little Caramac, but everyones allowed a faux pas
Ash ne-taku: 100mm long, 65mm wide, 12mm high
Ash ji-ita: 85mm long, 60mm wide, 8mm high
I love this little baby, the swellings at the bottom are where whorls of twigs had grown as is Hawthorns habit
Hawthorn ne-taku:50mm top diameter, 65mm bottom diameter, 45mm high
Hope you enjoy them
Cheers
John

Mark, many thanks for putting the pics on the site, (and for your kind words of encouragement), I'm glad that you're pleased with the stand.
Thanks Bob, yes we're hoping to get to the show, I'll keep an eye out for you and we can have a chat......none of that horrible red soup again though !
Thanks Dick, this size stand takes around 7 hours to carve, refine and sand. Then you've got the finishing which is around 5 to 6 coats of stain after sanding, about 10 minutes per coat.
Fiona has recently press ganged me into doing an article for the upcoming British Shohin Association magazine,(on the processes involved making the stands), perhaps if you ply her with Whisky, (or join the BSA), she may post you a copy.
Cheers

Re: Our new Shohin root stand (netaku)
John, I took the table with a shohin to the BBS monthly meeting last night just to show my pals your work. Folks were very impressed, including Dan !
I'm sorry that my photos of your netaku didn't do your work justice, as all those that have seen it in the flesh vs the photos I posted have all said how much better it looks and how impressed they were.
Keep up the good work.
I sense that some Mame size stands may be your next project

John, I'm in the process of adding my name to the overseas members of the BSA. I'm glad you were talked into sharing your expertise in an article. We'll all be looking forward to learning how and most likely for many of us "non-handy" types, you may have some more long hours sharing your treasure with others

Glad to hear you're joining us Dick, the more the merrier.
If you have any queries after reading the article drop me a PM, there are plenty of pictures to follow and all the tools used are also used for bonsai.
Cheers

Sorry to dredge this up from the archives, but I wondered if this article was ever published and if there was any way of obtaining a copy? Fiona?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.
