Re: New "toys for the big boys"
Wow great material. That first one will make a great stubby tree - not sure why it is wired the way it is but I'd make the canopy much smaller on that one.
I like the potential of the raft too.
these are the small shoot variety I suppose?

Hi IBC.
This is called Philippine Holly---Ilex aquifolium
this tree is in natural windswept style in the wild...Should I continue with it?
BTW, this is not the pot for it. A bigger growing concrete pot is being manufactured for it.
"
Another monster right? (not me the tree )
Which one is your prefered front? The first one got more natural deadwood, the second one got more trunk and visual movement.
Any virtuals coming from the heart is always very much welcome.

Hi Jun,
Nice monsters! The Ilex is definately windswept material - lovely movement.
I am amazed that it has very little root showing. Aren't you concerned that the few roots it has will dry out?
Best,
Todd

Hi Todd.
Thanks! Which/who's the monster?hehehe.
This is a very tough specie. It will survive even for a week or two in this condition then spring back to life again if planted, just keep the trunk and base moist all the time, that's the secret.
If you look closely in the first photo, there is a dark green spot right on the center of the yamadori. that is a new leaf shoot growing even at this condition..this tree is already 2 and 1/2 days at this condition before it reached my garden today from the far south area of the country.
Tough journey for a tough tree.

jun

Hey Jun,
I think you should take that first one back - it has a hole in it. I hope you got a discount!

Re: New "toys for the big boys"
Andrew,
When I buy some of my materials. I bought them by the Kilos, so I got 50% off the cost most of the time. Just kidding.
I like holes in trees and hollow trees, it gives more character to it. Most body parts of these casuarinas were harvested for firewoods, then the trees develops new trunks and wounds healed thru time and the process were repeatedly done for a long time until the tree became hollows. Hollows because wounds on casuarinas will rot away in the wild until all the cores were consumed by the elements then they become distorted... then they find their way in my doorsteps, for a cheap price that you wouldn't believe.

Hi John. I am letting the first tree grows wild for a few more months to thicken the branches before the first styling. Branches are all over and more than a meter in length now and looks very ugly, the short trunk is almost not visible now.

As windswept?

Well, that's about all I've got with that. I just think it is the better front because it shows off more character; I like the hollowed area. Now whether or not it should be windswept I will leave up to your very talented hands
