acacia for bonsai
acacia is an underutilized material for bonsai. indonesia and the phillipines (and possibly other countries ) are exceptions , as artists in those countries create wonderous bonsai using locally sourced material. species which abound in Hawaii, including acacia farnensiana aka aroma, klu, etc. proposis pallida aka kiawe, mesquite, algaroba , etc. and leucaena leucocephala aka koa haole, have not been widely used by the hawaii bonsai community, however, there is potential that some of us intend explore. some pictures of modest collected material follow.
best wishes, sam

Re: acacia for bonsai
pallida wood is heavy, dense and very strong. its burns hot and is the wood of choice for heating rocks for the underground oven (imu). it also makes high quality charcoal . no problem with the durability of the deadwood. inspired by jolz and crushdrive's posts, I am on the hunt for a large pallida trunk
