Re: Black Basalt Material of KHÁNH VĨNH - Stone ...
Hi Hưng - Trần,
Thank you for showing us your amazing stones.
The stone you post here, evoke's for me a very old sleeping volcano.
The comforting rounded and inviting silky surface of the island does us forget the source of fire who's lying underneath it.
The fact of the placement of the crater lake, symmetrical in the middle, is for me esthetically less pleasing,
still it is for me a very attractive deep water pool stone.
The lake has the impression to be very deep, leading to the unknown.
regards, Sunip

Hi Hung Tran. Hi Sunip. ... I've enjoyed the stones and responses from Sunip. In this last one, I think it is not bad for the lake to be in the middle of the stone if its overflow across the front side of the stone is to one side or the other of the lake surface. The stone has a nice directional feel if it leans slightly favoring one direction for the water to flow over the front lip, but it would arguably not be as nice for suiseki appreciation if the overflow was indeterminable toward the left or right. It can be managed by leaning the stone left-to-right and front-to-back.
Alternatively, you can enjoy the stone at wherever its natural bottom allows placement which could allow overflow equally to the left or right. That would be a very natural appreciation fully embraced by shangshi or viewing stone landscape-view appreciation. Suiseki display involves knowledge of play (like the limits on the ball used for a game) that are sometimes explicit & other times very subtle. Subtle distinctions are a language which enthusiasts learn.
Neither suiseki nor scholar rock appreciation springs simply from confidence in your feeling... in builds through layers of understanding for everyone differently & resulting feeling arising from intellect as well as art.
Always, we should focus on respect for friends & appreciation of opportunity to glimpse their lives. It is extraordinary to share appreciation with a friend in Vietnam & another in Holland, shortly before rushing to a stone collecting trip with others in Virginia. I hope Hung Tran & Sunip are also, soon, somewhere on a river.

Hi Hung Tran.
I notice you show your beautiful stones in the similar setting of a light colored suiban
wich is lovely.
How would it be if some stones where placed in a darker suiban,
or a suiban filled with a bit darker sand?
Hi Chris,
Thanks, the overflow to the left makes indeed a essential difference.
I wish you a free mind on your collecting trip.
regards, Sunip

Re: Black Basalt Material of KHÁNH VĨNH - Stone ...
Hi Sunip... Thanks for the thoughtful wish of a free mind. It is what a collector cannot avoid if focused on stones at the bottom of a stream bed while wading. In Washington DC (closer to the collecting site than my home), the temperature was 97 degrees F & the heat index was 121 degrees F. While perspiring profusely standing in the stream at heights from our ankles to our chests, I do not think any of the Potomac Viewing Stone Group collectors noticed the heat. Perhaps, when near fully-immersed, we noticed the water's unusual warmth. And we noticed eyes burning or eyeglasses/goggles/facemasks staining from our own sweat. Everybody seemed to agree that being in the modesty flowing river was simply great.
I won't hijack Hung Tran's thread with photos. In fact, I've yet to unpack from my vehicle. I was last off the river, but a friend was waiting (thanks, Jim... it was VERY thoughtful!!!) to help me carry stones up a significantly steep river bank. There is nothing like sharing such days with stone buddies... :-)

Re: Black Basalt Material of KHÁNH VĨNH - Stone ...
Hi Hưng - Trần.
This stone gives me the feeling of the hidden creatures only seen by the more sensitive people,
i also got the image of the mythical medusa head.
I understand the wood stand, but maybe a smaller daisa would enhance the power of this stone.
This is for me like a majestic rock standing in solitude and being complete in itself.
Seeing this stone, i dream about enlarging it to 20 meter hight and placing it on a nice spot.
Inspired by this stone and taking it as a natural design,
it would be a challenge for all sculptors and architects to build such a enormous tripod structure.
The nice spaces and beautiful flowing shapes give a feeling of harmony and creating a special atmosphere.
regards, Sunip

Hi Hưng - Trần,
_ Mountain No 1 :
_ Mountain No 2 :
_ Mountain No 3 :
Thank you for showing these nice far distant mountains.
With an atmosphere around them of silence, nr. 2 shows also a lovely sort of simplicity which i have to explore.
The beautiful and impressive nr. 1 show's me a front that is more closed and not so inviting but has lovely slopes on the other sides.
For now i am really moved by the character of nr. 2 but i am not sure how it will work, seen from other sides.
Regards, Sunip
