Stumped, IDeas?
I dug this up earlier in the spring expecting a yellow Birch. The more I look and the more it grows I realize I missed that mark by a bit. The best I can come up with at this point is a Canada Plum, but Philadelphia (where it is from) is well outside that species native range. Anyone recognize it? Note the red glands at the base of the leaf, and the red stem.

mystery meat
I wish- but I don't think it is any kind of birch- the veins are wrong- river birch veins, as well as yellow birch veins, seem straighter (there is a joke here somewhere). thanks for the attempt though, joe. Anybody else?

Canada plum is probably right. We don't have many/any of them down here, but it fits the descriptions -- though yours seems to have slightly larger teeth on the leaf edges than the illustrations in my books. You do have to allow for variation, though.

well, that was easy
Thanks Jim, you don't expect to be right trying to find out what kind of tree you already know is. That could be clearer. Canada Plum it is then till someone says otherwise.
