Re: Some azaleas in bloom
Here is the close up picture of the flowersGlaucus wrote:Yes, it did look bigger than the other that does seem to be 'Miyama Mangetsu'. Now I don't know for sure if it is 'Seidai' or 'Shugetsu' or one of the other similar ones. It seems 'Shugetsu' is more purple and 'Seidai' more pink and 'Shugetsu' has a bit stronger yellowish blotch. If I had to guess, I would guess 'Shugetsu'.
Isn't the kenben of 'Sachi no Hana' too strong to be the one in the picture? Maybe a close up of the flower shape will help.
Also, do you think the colour is a true red or barely not because of too much purple? Can't be sure looking at a picture.
I saw someone with a vireya bonsai on an Australian bonsai forum:
http://www.ausbonsai.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=133&t=4258
They may not be long lived as evergreen azalea.
The color is rather pink redish than purple
and here is my Kakuo in training

Shugetsu... Glaucus, that's the one. I've been thinking 'shugetsu' and saying 'seidai'. Thanks!
Thanks for the Vireya info too!

Beautiful!
In the fifth picture, did you buy the small red flowered one in the round cream colored pot as 'Kinsai'?
The last one is 'Kozan', the parent of 'Nikko' and MANY other popular satsuki.

Thanks Russell for your compliment.
The samll tree in the round pot used to be a cutting (a gift from a bonsai club member) and I think it is a Kinsai but I am not so sure because the patals are not as samll as the ones of Kinsai variety.
The Kozan I bought from David Kreutz in 2009 at the PBA show in DC, here is the pictures when I bought it

Very nice work on the 'Kozan'! You have some beautiful satsuki.
The red one is actually 'Sango-sai'.

You have some beautiful satsuki, Xuan!
Glaucus, is this 'Usugi-gyoten' or 'Hanazono'? I thinks it's 'Kaho' group, but what? That's not 'Eikan' group foliage, imo. You can see it side by side with Xuan's 'Asahi-no-hikari' in the Poland thread.
Your cuttings are really nice!

I don't know. It I never heard of 'Usugi-gyoten' before when you mentioned it earlier. I looked it up and 'Usiji Gyoten' is a sport of 'Kaho' similar to 'Gyoten', but paler. 'Hanazono' should have both red and purple, or at least the potential to do so.
The best guess so far is probably 'Hanazono', though. If needed I can post some 'Hanazono' pictures off a Japanese site to compare with.
I tried to find the pale lavender one with the finely shaped flowers. Unless it has darker purple shibori it doesn't seem to be in my dictionary.

Are you talking about the one of Xuan's I called 'koromo-shikibu'? I think it's considered one of the "Southern Indian hybrids" (indica) popular here in the American South. Nurserymen lump it with the other indicas, right or wrong. Obviously, the name's Japanese, but as tsutsuji, not satsuki.
Yes, I'd like to see more pictures of 'hanazono'. I kind of think that's what it is.

Re: Some azaleas in bloom
This one:
May be some other than satsuki azalea as well.
'Hanazone' pictures:
Pictures from http://www.satsuki-bonsai.com and http://nao-k.jp/satuki/satuki.htm
As you can see this looks pretty close. But I have never seen any of the 'Asahi Zuru'-group with my own eyes and you can see the difference between 'Eikan' leaves and 'Kaho' leaves so you will be more sure than I will.

Re: Some azaleas in bloom
I think Xuan's plant looks like the 'Hanazono' in the last picture you posted. I'd feel comfortable calling it that.
As for that lavender one, I'm lost on that one also. It looks like a lavender 'Kozan'.

Does the Kozan have lavender color too? I have only sen the white and very pale pink (like mine)

Re: Some azaleas in bloom
Xuan, 'Kozan' really isn't white. In Japan, the color is called "toki" which translates to "light pink". Often it looks white until you put it with something that really is white.
Figuring out the lavender one is going to take some work. Is that the only color flower is has?
