Re: The Eight Immortals
Peter,
This was interesting reading. Did you know that in Japan, the Jomon culture made the first ceramics about 16,000 years ago. They were also known as the "tree culture", due to their reliance on trees for many utilitarian purposes. It was their first earthenware ceramics that helped them advance their culture from a gathering and hunting subsistence to a more advanced sedentary culture.
Thought you may find that interesting. I doubt they had beautiful green glazes however.

Re: The Eight Immortals
Hello Neil,
this is very interesting what you write here.
The Chinese and the Japanese culture is very old, there is much to explore.
For us lovers of pots, the history of bonsai pots highly interesting.
They are rooted in history.
On my website, I try all of these stories to collect, for a better understanding of the origin of the pots.
p.s. I do not believe it in Japan at this time has a green glaze has been made.
Best regards
Peter

Re: The Eight Immortals
Peter,
That is correct. There was no glaze 16,000 years ago!! Jomon culture made earthenware. BUT, it was high fired and very durable, unlike much of the prehistoric pottery (earthenware) that emerged in North America 13,000 years later. Those ceramics were low fired and very crude cooking pots.
I think it is kind of intriquing that the culture in Japan responsible for the first ceramics in the world's prehistory were known as the Tree Culture.
