Bud grafting yew
I have a large old yew that has virtually all growth at the outermost branch tips. I've tried heavy feeding, hard pruning over, taking an ice pick to the bark, etc. over the past four season. Not one single bud below the tips.
So, I've almost given up. However, why not try bud grafting.
For those of you who have actually grafted a yew, I'd appreciate your thoughts on the process. I have vigorous new growth on the tips. Lighter green foliage, but the shoots are super thin. About 1/16 to 1/8 an inch. How are you supposed to make a wedge cut with something that small.
And if not the new green growth, then what. Should I try a thicker section of last years growth?
I basically want to know what type and where I should get scions from.
Thanks in advance.
