Something from scratch
A few suggestions:
Tree #2 and tree #3 are a little too alike in size. Cut one back a bit & let the other one gain.
The group is too near the center. Move them over a bit toward one end. If the roots are in the way, do it next repotting. Meanwhile hang up a sign: Business Going On As Usual During Alterations.
The space between #1 & #3 and between #1 & #2 are virtually identical. Either #2 or #3 should be much closer to #1. If the roots are in the way, see above suggestion.
This may be picky, but #1 is the tree that should be planted on a little hill.
It may be the photograph, but #1 appears to be leaning back. I would make it lean a little more forward.
I enjoy your basic structure, but the trunks on #2 & #3 are awfully straight. Are they too stiff to get a little curve with heavy wire?
I think sometimes it's easier to let a single tree alone than a group planting. With a group, there is always something to fiddle with.

Re: first effort to create something from scratch
thank you for your advice folks - Irene, I undersestimated the size of pot I needed so the trees are not arranged exactly as I would have liked. I also underestimated the depth, because they had all been lurking in plastic pots for ages and had acquired some fat long roots which I needed to cut back, but didn't want to overdo it and not leave enough fibrous one, hence one of them appearing to be on a wee hill. Tree #1 is actually leaning forward too much and I've since secured it a little more with wire.

Hello Bobby. It's difficult to see from the pics but the trees look equally spaced? Two close together and one further away works better and looks more natural. To move the one on the left, as close as you can get it to the middle one would work well. You have time to do this before they break dormancy.
