May I ask how long have you kept those long shoots growing for the apparent reason of fattening the branches?

Hi Jupp. Lovely result.
I get the impression that this azalea has had a hard prune back at some point before you got it. To perhaps answer Alexandra's question, I might be wrong but I think that the thickness of those branches is not because of "sacrifice" long shoots but may be more to do with it having been a much bushier tree that has been taken back a fair bit but not right into the trunk. The reason I am saying this is because I have in the past two years been doing that exercise with my own azalea. I won't hijack your thread with pictures of it as I intend to put up a thread about it later this summer. Just my take on it and as I say it might be completely off target.
But the main thing is, you have achieved a splendid result with your tree.
