Re: Happy New Year
And the Hoppin' john is cooking now. For the uninitiated, in the Southeastern USA, your first meal of every new year is supposed to be Hoppin' John to bring luck and prosperity for the year ahead.
Hoppin John is made from black-eyed peas, ham hock (or bacon or appropriate substitute), rice, flaked red pepper (or Jalapeno peppers), a bay leaf, chicken stock. Serve with collard greens and your hot sauce of choice.
Can't wait.
Lots of recipes on the web, but Jackie has her own.
