Just HOW cold is it going to get this winter
I have just grabbed this from Google, -6c right now but we are going to have -16c tonight, and probably even lower for us because we are not in the city. Anyone beating this?
Almost all my trees are in the big greenhouse... but the well established YEWS are toughing it out under a blanket of snow... they LOVE it!
Snug and out of the FREEZING weather, these trees have had a cold snap earlier so flowering trees will benefit, and tender trees are sitting pretty.

We've had -8/9 but I think Scotland has been as low as -25. Changing the subject slightly, is your Escalonia ok? It ooks a bit bereft of leaves on the left side. Would love a greenhouse filled with gems like those though.

Well spotted Will the Escallonia is OK, it had a 'mite' infestation that's why it was not shown later this year. I am treating but advice is always welcome, don't forget that the long left branch was weak anyway and needed more foliage.

Hope you caught it in time. I tend to use a fine sprayer with 30 parts water and 1 part lime sulphur in late Winter/ early Spring on my deciduous trees, Pines and Junipers, for blackspot, gall mite, Spider mite and needlecast. Worth a try maybe. Have the branches budded up?

Hi guy's,
I shot these just a few minutes ago in my petit garden! It just keeps on snowing! Amazing!!!
XL is fast a sleep under this thick blanket of snow.
In the right backside you can just make out my large Chamaecyparis and a small larch. I wonder who asks first? And on the left side table a larch Hawthorn.
Cheers,
Hans van Meer.

Worst we've had in west central Scotland is -10C but I believe the Hielans have had it down at -20C. The trees in my unheated but insulated glasshouse are doing just fine and it has been sitting at about 3C warmer than outside. The blanket of snow covering it has helped no doubt. Those outdoors but sitting in the lee of the house seem fine as do those out in the main garden. But then winter only officially starts in a couple of days time.
Not that I recall last year's actually ending.

Here's what we can see right now (11am) in the back garden now that the worst of the dense overnight fog has lifted. It is currently -8C. Once I can get the glasshouse door open again, I will nip in and find out what it went down to last night - suspect it'll be in double figures.
To add insult to injury, just about everywhere else in the UK seems to have been able to see the early morning winter solstice-coinciding lunar eclipse except for here. Ironic, as I had spent a couple of hours last night setting up the camera on the astro-telescope in the expectation of a spectacle. Sod's Law.

When icicles hang by the wall...
Two of my Junipers are in the lee of the house against a south wall. But even they are feeling the freeze.
Icicles hanging by the wall?
And while we're here, any suggestions as to why the tips of this juniper started going brown in the late summer? It was fairly extensive over the tree to the point where I was getting worried I would lose it. Not whole shoots - just bits of them. Funnily enough the spread of whatever it is slowed down considerably when the cold weather kicked in in November.

Oh dear, Yvonne. You have no idea how much I am sitting here longing to ride my mountain bike up that road. Idyllic!!!
When can I come over?
In the meantime, hmmmm decisions: what flavour of soup shall I have?

Heehee. Well ironically, your post has prompted me to look out a very excellent book I got last year called The Soup Bible. it has over 200 soup recipes, so after I've knocked out anything with asparagus which I don't like and all the fish-based ones that don't like me - heck that should do us the winter surely?
It is also now making me very hungry indeed.

I can highly recommend the Red Pepper, Chilli and Lime (page 221) - a winter favourite in our house.
I just wish I could give my trees some hot soup . We've only had two days of temps above zero out of the last three weeks. All my pots have been frozen solid most of this time.
Can I use a greenhouse heater to thaw them out, then use the heater to keep temps up or am I better leaving them as they are? Any help would be much appreciated.
Night time temps here have been about -4 down to -10 most nights, daytime temps not much better.

Re: Just HOW cold is it going to get this winter
I'd be tempted just to leave them now. None of mine are heated in any way. Hopefully it's not going to get any worse.
And I do so hope those aren't words I have to eat.
