Re: Does anyone know....
I think you are asking about Jurojin, one of the Japanese seven gods of fortune.
Here is a link to look at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jurojin
Hope this helps.

Re: Does anyone know....
Hi Yvonne... The gourd on a staff represents a Daoist sage-- generally associated with wandering in remote mountain locations. See Rolf Stein's Worlds in Miniature for details that are scholarly. The gourd was a container for medicine also seen as an entrance to other (e.g. drug-induced) worlds of Daoist magicians/alchemists. The gourd with its narrow passage was also metaphorically the place where a traveling magician could reside in miniature. The two folk gods Fukurokuju & Jurojin known for large foreheads and carrying objects including a staff are often confused & each is associated with longevity by different paths.

Hi Yvonne... I recently noted a description by the online Magical Miniature Landscapes author Robert Baran regarding the legendary magician Fei Jiang-fang and other "Gourd Elders" [link HERE]. His account is worth considering in appreciation of your figure.

Hi Chris Cochrane
Many thanks. This is interesting reading, adding to my love for the stone.
I look at the stone every day. I love the quiet elegance, and the collour. I am really happy I decided to buy him when I was in China with BCI, even though it was a bit to expensive. Both I and my husband see the stone as a uniqe person statue. And it it funny to see, how it is absolutely nothing but a stone, if it is taken out of the dai.
This is telling me, that the finder had a very good eye for stones, as he/she walked along the river.
Kind regards Yvonne
